Boiling Mulberry Silk Cocoons: Using Alkaline Solution to Unwind Filaments for Silk Thread Production

Mulberry silk cocoons are boiled in an alkaline solution of soda ash with the pupa still inside in order to make the cocoon easier to unwind in a single, unbroken filament that can be woven into silk thread.
