The Khasis used to import corals from Calcutta. Khasi paila or coral beads are large, round, or near-cylindrical in shape with a bulge in the middle. They are usually plain without any filigree or other work.

Paila beads are made from coral, an organic gemstone that's formed by the secretions of marine animals or polyps. Paila beads are always paired with round gold beads (that are hollow inside) to make necklaces.
