Launch of the Meghalaya’s First Eri Silk Village

Ri-Bhoi District in Meghalaya is one of the central regions where Eri culture and handloom weaving is practised, and to pin this epicentre, Umden, Diwon, Raid Nongtluh located in Ri-Bhoi was declared as the State’s first Eri Silk Village on the 12th of February 2021.
Umden is equipped with expert weavers and master dyers who not only weave with Ryndia to cater to local demands, but the weavers from the region cater to orders from national and international customers who know this art form.
This declaration is to inspire the weavers and spinners from the village to carry on the traditions of weaving, which could ideally transform Meghalaya into a significant player in the Silk Industry, further enabling the villages to develop into a selfreliant, vibrant community that represents women empowerment.
This declaration will provide various facilities such as capacity building, design upscaling, financial assistance, promotion, selling & marketing, & integrating the sector with the latest technology to the villages.
