The origin of the diamond motif design commonly found on traditional garments of the Garo tribe can be traced back to Mangsang area in East Garo Hills Meghalaya.
In the olden times, abundant peacocks were found in the Mangsang region and the locals used the peacock’s eye as an inspiration for the diamond motifs.
As the weavers got better in crafting, the eye of the peacock morphed into a more perfectly shaped diamond design. This design is still presently used in the Garo ethnic wear as a symbolic representation of their traditional culture.
