The village weavers in Meghalaya, mainly from Ri-Bhoi District use natural ingredients that are eco-friendly for the dyeing of Eri Silk.
The colours are created from flowers, leaves, vegetable peels, and tree bark collected by women from nearby forests.
What is unique about the natural dyeing practice in this region is that the weavers often use natural dye fixative/ mordants to make the natural colours stick to the yarn.
Some of the natural mordants are Sohkhu tree leaves (Baccaurea ramiflora lour) tree bark of Diengrnong (local name), Sohtung leaves (terminalia chebula retz) ect.
