Traditional Spinning and Weaving of Eri Silk in Ri-Bhoi

In Ri-bhoi, weavers use a traditional spindle for spinning yarn from cocoons. A “Takli” consisting of a spindle with a disc-like base is used for hand spinning where in the left hand the spinner holds the cocoon cake and drafts the strand with the right hand to the spindle.

Eri silk woven in Meghalaya is made in the most traditional way with skills and knowledge handed down from generation to generation.

By supporting handmade we are enabling our artisans to pursue this traditional skill that is an integral part of our culture.
