Yarn Twisting

Twisting is the process of interlacing fibers or yarns to create a continuous strand or ply. 

Plying refers to the process of twisting together two or more strands of yarn to create a thicker, stronger yarn or rope.

This module will provide an introduction to twisting ply yarn using a hand twisting tool, with one or more colors.

Macrame

Macramé is a crafting technique that involves using yarn or rope to create various decorations by tying them into knots. They are then form into various decorative items like:- bags, wall decor, key chains, belts etc.

Shibori

Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns on fabric. The pattern are achieved by stitching a pattern onto the fabric before dyeing or by tying it. 

The technique was done using local dye ingredients over cotton and ryndia fabric in various tie dye designs

Loom waste yarn or syrnai was used to stitch different embroidery pattern onto the fabric.

Revival of Heritage
The initiative to revive the heritage design is through collaborative research conducted across the clusters. The products for the revival of heritage design will be sampled and weaved by the weavers within the clusters ensuring authenticity and  high quality craftsmanship.

1. Understanding Heritage: Conduct in-depth research to identify traditional designs, materials, and weaving techniques that hold cultural significance in each cluster. 

2. Community Engagement: Involve local artisans in discussions to gather insights and stories about their craft, which can inform the design process. 

3. Sampling Process: Develop initial samples based on collaborative research, integrating traditional motifs and modern functionality. 

4. Local Materials: Prioritize the use of locally sourced materials to enhance sustainability and maintain the cultural identity of the products.

This approach not only revives heritage design but also creates a sustainable model that empowers artisans and preserves their invaluable skills for future generations

National Handloom Day
National Handloom Day 2024 was celebrated in Shillong with a vibrant array of events aimed to promoting the rich tradition of handloom weaving in the region. The celebration emphasized the significance of handloom in preserving culture identity and supporting local artisans. 

The event at State Central Library, Shillong included Chief guest Bah Paul Lyngdoh, Textiles Minister and Special Guest, Dr. Anna Louise Meynell, international textile expert from Scotland,  Commissioner & Secretary, Arts & Culture Shri. FR Kharkongor, Padmashree Smt. Patricia Mukhim and government officials.
