Very scant written records are available about the silk industry in Meghalaya. That leaves much of its origins shrouded in mystery. Although oral tradition asserts its presence, it was only during the British period that chronicling efforts took shape, giving us authentic glimpses at last.
One invaluable piece of recorded history exists in the expansively detailed 26-Volume Imperial Gazetteer of India, 1908.
